# XML sitemap generator

Paste a list of URLs or drop a .txt / .csv export. You get a valid sitemap.xml with every address encoded and escaped, duplicates gone, and large lists split into numbered files plus an index.

## What the generator does to your list

- **Cleans each URL.** Spaces around it are trimmed, any `#fragment` is dropped, and spaces, accented letters and other characters a URL may not carry are percent-encoded as UTF-8. International domains become punycode.
- **Escapes it for XML.** `&`, `<`, `>`, quotes and apostrophes become entities, so `?a=1&b=2` no longer breaks the file.
- **Keeps one site.** URLs on another host, on `http` instead of `https`, or with and without `www.` are listed and left out, because a sitemap may only cover its own host.
- **Removes duplicates** after cleaning, keeping the first occurrence and your order.
- **Splits** at 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per file, the protocol's limits, and writes a sitemap index that lists the parts.

Upload the files to your site, add a `Sitemap:` line to robots.txt, and submit the sitemap (or the index) in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why paste URLs instead of letting the tool crawl my site?**

Browsers do not let one website read pages from another (the same-origin policy, enforced through CORS), so a page like this cannot crawl your site. Paste the list from your CMS, an export of your pages, a crawler or your analytics instead. That also works for staging sites and pages behind a login.

**Should I add changefreq and priority?**

Google ignores both, so they are off by default. Other search engines may still read them, and you can switch them on under Options. What helps is an accurate lastmod: the date the page's main content last changed.

**How large can one sitemap be?**

The sitemaps.org protocol allows at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB (52,428,800 bytes) uncompressed per file. Gzip makes the download smaller but the limit still applies to the uncompressed size. Above either limit the generator writes numbered files and a sitemap index that lists them.

**Which lastmod option should I pick?**

Use From the list when your export has a real modification date per URL. Today stamps every URL with today's date, which is only honest for a brand-new site; search engines learn to distrust dates that change without the content changing.

**Is anything I paste uploaded?**

No. The URLs are cleaned and the files built in JavaScript in this tab, and downloads are created locally. The site counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and never receives what you type, paste or drop into the tools.
